Dr. Thompson has been a Mechanical Engineering faculty member at UC since 1994. He re-ceived his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, and subsequently joined UC following a four-year appointment in powertrain engineering development at Ford Motor Co. He has also served multiple terms as a visiting scientist with the Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Vehicles Directorate, Wright-Patterson AFB. Since 2001, Dr. Thompson has also served as a Graduate Program Director for Mechanical Engineering at UC. Dr. Thompson has graduated two Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. students who have received tenure-track appointments at other state universities in Ohio; both have subsequently been tenured (G. Kremer, Ph.D. 1998, now Department Head and Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Ohio Univ.; Amit Shukla, Ph.D., 2002, now Associate Professor in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering at Miami Univ.)

Dr. Thompson’s research interests include fundamental issues in mechanics, nonlinear dynamics, control, and applied mathematics with an emphasis on industrial applications including vehicle technologies and power transmission applications. He is also actively involved with teaching and research in computational design methods and applied statistics in manufacturing applications.
