Autobiography
Safa Herfat graduated in 2005 with a B.S. in biomedical engineering from the University of Cincinnati.
He immediately enrolled in graduate school at UC to pursue his doctorate in Biomedical Engineering.
This route would allow him the opportunity to continue his academic endeavors in a more focused area
of biomedical engineering; biomechanics & tissue engineering. He chose to continue his education in
this field because of his passion for orthopaedics and sports medicine. He completed his coursework
in the winter of 2007 and is now focusing on his thesis research and STEP graduate fellowship position.
Safa will be working with math and science teachers at the Western Hills Design Technology High School during
the 2007-2008 school year. He hopes that his work with Project STEP will influence the high school students
to continue their education after graduation in a math or science-related field. Safa’s research is focused
on the knee joint, predominantly the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The research is primarily biomechanics
research but has many applications to orthopaedics and functional tissue engineering. One of his long term career
goals is to attain an academic faculty position in a prestigious biomedical engineering program or orthopaedic surgery department.
