Autobiography
Michael Starr is a third year graduate student finishing up his Masters degree. He will begin his PhD work
in the fall, also in materials science with a focus on polymers. Having worked full time in the aerospace
industry for two years following his bachelor’s degree his decision to return to school in pursuit of advanced
degrees was readily greeted with an open mind and a greater appreciation for the educational process. His main
area of study is focused on chemical characterization methods for materials and surface properties pertaining to
adhesion. Outside of his graduate research Michael enjoys learning just about anything new to him. He is particularly
interested in how science and technology can be applied to athletic activities. Being an avid runner and cyclist as well
as recreational soccer player, he has become interested in the ways new and old technologies can be creatively applied to
increase the enjoyment, safety, and health of athletes in their respective sports. He hopes to use his current knowledge
and that which he is sure to gain from participating in the STEP program to help educate high school students in the
relevance of materials and the science behind them as they are used to improve the way of life in an urban environment.
