Biography
I majored in mechanical engineering as an undergraduate because I was strong in
math and science during my high school education. I completed three internships
with 3M in Minnesota and one internship with Procter and Gamble during which I
gained invaluable practical knowledge and experience regarding real world
engineering problems. I decided to change disciplines for graduate school because
I felt that my I would enjoy solving problems related to consumer products instead
of problems related to the equipment that produced those products. I spent my first
year of graduate school immersing myself in issues related to design and also building
basic drawing, spatial, form and color theory skills. My second year was dedicated to
core industrial design skill development, particularly, sketching, rendering, and
digital modeling in addition to studying sustainable design methodology. I also taught
and assisted in teaching several courses regarding manufacturing materials and processes
for 4th year industrial design students. During my third and final year, I will develop
my thesis will in the area of applications of sustainable design to energy and waste
flows in a typical American home. As a STEP Fellow, I plan to bring my teaching
experience, engineering background, and knowledge of the studio model of teaching to a
traditional high school classroom in an effort to illustrate the benefits of majoring
in engineering.
