Biography
Sarah Pumphrey is a second year graduate student, pursuing a PhD in Environmental
Engineering. This is Sarah’s second year as a Fellow in Project
STEP. Sarah’s main interests include social justice, education,
environmental stewardship and technological solutions, thus inspiring
her to participate in this program. Sarah hopes that STEP will position
her to spread her enthusiasm for science and technology to the high school
students she meets. Sarah was inspired by the research activities she
experienced as an undergraduate. Her co-op experience took her abroad
to Germany, where she did research at the Technical University of Munich
and traveled with an international group of engineers and scientists to
explore various options for waste management and water treatment. Sarah’s
interests have also taken her to Guatemala where she helped build and
install several cisterns for families in an impoverished village. Among
her activities, she is a member of the University of Cincinnati’s
Environmental Sustainability Committee, which meets with university administrators
and officials to uphold sound environmental practices on our campus.
