Committee Email: Daniel.Oerther@uc.edu Dr. Oerther has brought his specialty of environmental biotechnology into both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum in CEE. He modernized the Environmental Microbiology lecture and lab by integrating state-of-the-art technology through the use of hands-on experiments in molecular biology focused upon open-ended, student-selected research questions which are currently being adapted and implemented at four additional institutions and formalized in a text book to be published by John Wiley and Sons. He has integrated research into teaching, as evidenced by him leading the NSF funded project on 'Integrating Genomics Research in the Undergraduate Engineering Curriculum in Environmental Engineering.' He has attracted more than two million dollars of research funds. He has supervised to completion 2 Ph.D. students and 4 M.S. thesis students, and has 4 M.S. thesis and 4 Ph.D. students in progress. He has authored or co-authored 25 journal articles, 6 book and book chapters, and more than 100 conference presentations and proceeding papers.
