This lesson assumes no prior knowledge of hurricanes or tropical storms. Students are expected to be able to read a table of data, refer to a map, and use information in written form to solve a problem.

Summary

This lesson engages students in an activity that allows them to learn about the devastating nature of hurricanes while also learning about the ways that the storms are tracked. Students use the information from a PowerPoint presentation and a handout to track a storm as it approaches the coast of the U.S.

 
Objectives

Students will be able to:
1. Identify the steps in the formation of a hurricane
2. Determine the naming convention for hurricanes and tropical storms
3. Identify the different categories of hurricanes and what damage is expected with each
4. Identify the months that comprise hurricane season
5. Track the path of a hurricane using coordinates and a map

 
Mateirals Required

Copies of handouts for each student
Introductory PowerPoint and projecting equipment (both optional)

Earth and Space Sciences B.10 - Interpret weather maps and their symbols to predict changing weather conditions worldwide (e.g. monsoons, hurricanes and cyclones).
