Solidworks Corporation (www.solidworks.com) kindly offered to freely provide the student version of their design and analysis program Solidworks with Cosmos to all teachers advising students for our High School Bridge Competition. Teachers should follow this link to register and obtain a fully functional educational version of Solidworks with Cosmos, which they will be able to install and use to verify the design of the bridge and optimize it.

Students who are interested in learning more about the bridge building may find the following sites to be useful
-
Designing and Building File-Folder Bridges
http://bridgecontest.usma.edu/manual.htm
"Provides students with an opportunity to learn how engineers use math, science, and technology to design real structures - in the context of a hands-on model bridge-building project. It is intended primarily for high school students, but those in lower grades should be able to complete all but Learning Activity #3, which requires the application of geometry, algebra, and some basic trigonometry."
Broken down into a number of sections, each downloadable separately from the listed site.

Bridge Designer
http://www.jhu.edu/~virtlab/bridge/truss.htm
Actually a truss designer. An online truss builder that calculates truss forces for a truss drawn with loads given by the user. While it may be a bit much for use in the design of a model bridge, it could be an interesting learning tool.

Truss Bridge Laboratory
http://www.ce.ufl.edu/activities/trusslab/trussndx.html
University of Florida Civil Engineering site about bridges and trusses. Site gives an outline with links to sections on individual topics.
