DEPARTMENT POLICY ON SENIOR CURRICULUM
The following is intended to clarify the policy of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering on course requirements during the Senior year in the Materials Engineering program for the Class of 2001 and beyond.
- The department requires that: a minimum of 18 credit hours be taken in departmental option courses. These can be taken from all courses with the prefix 20-MTSC-5xx, 20-MTSC-6xx, 20-MTEN-5xx, 20-MTEN-6xx, 20-METL-4xx, 20-METL-5xx, 20-METL-6xx. Some dual-level courses are available at the 7xx level. These may be taken without petition. Any graduate level only course may be taken for undergraduate credit by petition to the Senior Advisor and the College of Engineering.
- As a result of the recent review by ABET all students in the undergraduate program must take a course in Materials and Energy Balances and a course in Composite Materials.
- The department requires that: a maximum of 6 credit hours of technical elective courses be taken in the College of Engineering. These courses can be taken from all courses with the prefix 20-yyyy-4xx or higher. Exceptions for lower level courses may be approved by petition submitted to the Senior Advisor. The courses 20-INDS-354 and 20-INDS-355, Manufacturing Processes I and II, have been pre-approved by the faculty of the department.
- All students registering for three quarters of Engineering Design Clinic receive the following credit for departmental courses and technical electives. Six of the Design Clinic credit hours are equivalent to the six credit hours required for Senior Projects. The remaining six credit hours are equivalent to the six hours of technical electives. This means that you do not register for Senior Projects and that you have no technical elective courses remaining.
- Even though Humanities/Social Sciences requirements are not established by the department, some clarification is deemed necessary. You must take 24 credit hours total of H&SS electives. A complete description of the requirements can be found on the COE web site.
IF YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SENIOR YEAR PLEASE MEET WITH PROF. POOL OR PROF. JAYARAMAN TO RESOLVE THEM.
