Computing Facilities Students working on computational tasks will have complete access to state-of-the-art computers in various research groups, the College of Engineering Computing Labs , and the UC’s Mainframe Computer Center with access to supercomputers. The Department of CEE also maintains a Construction Engineering and Management Computer Laboratory, which houses state-of-the-art computers with CAD and graphics capabilities. The College of Engineering has over 1000 microcomputers and workstations in College computer labs. Most popular software is available on the computers. Mainframe computing is available through the UC Computing Center and links to the CRAY supercomputer at the Ohio Supercomputer Center in Columbus, OH. UC’s College of Engineering requires students to own a portable PC (laptop) with specific software and wireless network access. Use of wireless technology permits any classroom to be used for computer-based teaching. UC has 50 of these classrooms spread out, and 30 of those are complete electronic classrooms, the others have varying levels of equipment. The complete electronic classrooms have the following: computer with network connection; laptop connection (video, sound, network, AC, modem); data/video projector; VCR (stereo and SVHS capable); document camera; slide projector; smart control (operate all equipment from one remote or touch panel), two zones of dimmable lights (front and rear); telephone; cable TV; operating system, network software, and Office productivity software; various multi media software; statistical packages; and other plug-ins. These classrooms are managed by trained staff who offer training in the classrooms and even stay with the instructor and teaching assistant for the first few classes to be sure that they know how to operate everything. |
