Environmental Engineering Laboratories
Laboratories are also available to carry out a variety of environmental
analyses. Equipment for
measurements of environmental pollutant include Shimadzu RF-1501
Spectroflurophotometer for measuring aqueous phase fluorescing species such as
polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Paragon 1000 FTIR Spectrometer for measuring
interactions with surfaces and absorbates, Analyst 300 Furnace and Flame Atomic
Absorption Spectrometer for measuring aqueous metal concentrations down to parts
per billion with the graphite furnace accessory, Shimadzu UV-1201
Spectrophotometer for measuring the UV-VIS absorption spectra of a wide variety
of compounds, and Shimadzu TOC-5-5- Total Organic Analyzer for measuring total
organic and inorganic carbon by combustion followed by infrared detection. In addition to well-equipped analytical and analyses laboratories there are several bench-scale and pilot-scale laboratory facilities to perform water and wastewater treatment studies, an aerosol and air quality laboratory, a gas pollution control laboratory, and a sate-of-the-art computational laboratory. All laboratories are integrated with lecture materials. Many laboratory experiments are open-ended, rather than repetition of cookbook procedures, so that students must design their experiments properly and make conclusions based on their findings. |
