UC REU SITE OVERVIEW

This Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site is in the area of in Structural Engineering with a special focus on understanding the behavior of structural components and assemblages, and explores strategies to enhance their capabilities. The basic approach used is discovery through actual construction, experimental testing, observing and recording, synthesizing the data collected, and generalizations. Projects are chosen in which students work in teams to organize an experimental study program by varying the pertinent variables impacting the response being investigated, and then using the test results to generalize their findings. This approach provides an opportunity for individual growth and challenge to the young and inquisitive mind. The purpose of this REU Site is to encourage talented undergraduates to enroll in graduate school by exposing them to research, and to increase their interest in graduate research. This REU Site will provide the students with experience using state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, and a "total" experience of: learning, research, report writing, and presentation.
