Undergraduate students are invited to participate in the following research projects in "Structural Engineering" with a special focus on techniques to study the "Development of Enhanced Materials and Structural Assemblages for Seismic Performance Evaluation Studies":

  1. Study of the Ductility and Deformation of High Strength Bolts in Tension
  2. Measurement of Slip in Slip-Critical Connections with Different Specification Holes
  3. Parametric Flexural Evaluation of Concrete Members Reinforced with High-Strength Reinforcement

* Applicants are expected to participate in writing technical papers for publication, conference presentations, and presentation at their home school after returning from the summer institute. Travel funds to attend conferences are available.

** Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who will be enrolled in a B.S. engineering degree program as a sophomore, pre-junior, junior or senior during the academic year 2007-2008 or is currently enrolled as a senior graduating by the end of the Fall 2008 term. Participants will receive a stipend to cover two months salary of $1,600 per month plus room, board, and travel expenses. Woman and minority candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. Persons with disabilities will be accommodated.

*** On your application package, indicate your first, second, and third project of interest; expected graduation date; GPA; course work completed and in progress; other experience which is relevant to the project areas (explain); a three to five page essay (double spaced) presenting your background and biographical information, explaining why you are interested in this program, how this program will benefit you and your career goals; and two recommendation letters from your instructors, each in a sealed and signed envelope. One of the recommendation letters must be from a faculty member who is willing to coordinate the presentation at your home school. Also, enclose an official copy of your recent transcript.

****Deserving candidates will be selected as the applications are received (as early as mid-March), so apply as early as possible. Do not wait till the last date in sending your application. A total of 9 students will be selected.
