Areas of Proficiency

Areas of Proficiency (Each student is required to complete the courses listed in ALL four areas). The faculty in Civil Engineering at the University of Cincinnati requires students to demonstrate proficiency in the following four areas: 

(1) Mechanics/Structures/Materials;

(2) Geotechnical/Soils;

(3) Fluids/Hydraulics; and

(4) Environmental Engineering.

To attain proficiency, students must take a series of required courses including an engineering design elective in each of the four areas as detailed below.

(1) Mechanics/Structures/Materials

• CEE381 Structures I (for class of 2008 and later replaced with CEE382 - Structural Analysis)

• CEE480 Structures II (for class of 2008 and later course eliminated)

• CEE474 Construction Materials

• CEE475 Construction Materials

• One design elective from the following list:
  

  • CEE481 Structural Steel

  • CEE482 Reinforced Concrete

  • CEE584 Wood/Masonry

(2) Geotechnical/Soils

• GEOL374 Geology for Engineers

• CEE476 Soil Mechanics

• CEE477 Soil Mechanics Lab

• One design elective from the following list:

  • CEE607 Pavement Design (not taught 06-07)

  • CEE681 Foundation Engineering I

  • CEE682 Foundation Engineering II

(3) Fluids/Hydraulics

• ENFD383 Fluid Mechanics

• CEE493 Hydraulic Systems

• CEE494 Hydraulic Systems Lab

• One design elective from the following list:

  • CEE543 Hydrology

  • CEE626 Environmental Systems Analysis

  • CEE693 Environmental Hydraulics

(4) Environmental Engineering

• CEE204 Introduction to Environmental Assessment and Remediation (formerly CHEM204 Bio-organic Chemistry)

• CEE345 Environmental Materials Balances

• One design elective from the following list:

  • CEE471 Environmental Engineering Design (formerly CEE471 Intro to Environmental Engineering)

  • CEE644 Environmentally Conscious Engineering

  • CEE674 Design of Gaseous Pollution Control Systems
