Undergraduate students are invited to participate in the following research projects which will be undertaken to understand the behavior of structural materials, components and assemblages through experimental testing, and explore strategies to enhance their capabilities:

  1. Mathematical Modeling of Monotonic and Cyclic Behavior of T-stub Steel Connections.
  2. Novel Steel Frame Connection With Damping Capability.
  3. Energy Dissipation in Steel Coupling Beams Involving Splice Joint Coupled with Elastometers.

* Applicants are expected to participate in writing technical papers for publication, conference presentations, and presentation at their home school after returning from the summer institute. Travel funds to attend conferences are available.

** Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled in a B.S. engineering degree program to be completed not earlier than the Fall 2003 term. Participants will receive a stipend to cover two months salary of $1,000 per month plus room, board, and travel expenses. Woman and minority candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. Persons with disabilities will be accommodated.

*** On your resume, indicate your first, second, and third project of interest; expected graduation date; GPA; course work completed and in progress; other experience which is relevant to the project areas (explain); a three to five page essay (double spaced) presenting your background and biographical information, explaining why you are interested in this program, how this program will benefit you and your career goals; and two recommendation letters from your instructors, each in a sealed and signed envelope. One of the recommendation letters must be from a faculty member who is willing to coordinate the presentation at your home school. Also, enclose an official copy of your recent transcript. Deserving candidates will be selected as the applications are received, so apply as early as possible, so do not wait till the last date in sending your application. A total of 9 students will be selected.
