Research FOCUSES: Development of microporous and mesoporous inorganic membranes, nanocrystalline solid oxide thin films, and nanostructured catalysts for applications in molecular separation, catalytic reactions, fuel cells, and novel optical chemical sensors. Research includes developing material synthesis methodologies, studying material structure-property relationships through various advanced characterizations, and understanding molecular and ionic transport phenomena and molecule-material interactions in microporous membranes and nanocrystalline thin films. · Molecular sieve zeolite membranes and surface-modified nanoporous ceramic membranes for advanced gas and liquid separations. · Transition metal-loaded microporous/nanoporous catalysts and catalytic membranes for efficient conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates and hydrocarbons to hydrogen. · Nanocrystalline solid oxide thin film-incorporated optical fiber sensors for high temperature gas detections. · Zeolite-fiber integrated micro optical sensors for highly sensitive, in-situ chemical detections in gas and liquid phases. · Nanostructured solid ionic thin films and membranes for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells and membrane reactors.
