Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering
University of Cincinnati
Welcome to the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering.
Thank you for visiting our department website. We hope the information you find here will stimulate your interest in learning more about the fields of Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering, and the exciting opportunities they offer as professional career paths.
The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Cincinnati is at the cutting edge of many important areas of study and research. It is particularly well known for its work in membranes, polymers, catalysis, thin films and coatings, ceramics, high temperature materials, composites, fuel cells, biomaterials, bioengineering, and in several areas of nano-science and technology.
The department offers undergraduate and graduate education leading to B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. The combined offering of chemical engineering and materials science and engineering courses in a single department offers opportunities for students not possible in separate departments because cutting edge research areas invariably cross disciplinary boundaries. Our graduates are, therefore, well sought after in academia and industry within the State of Ohio, nationally, and internationally.
One of the strengths of our undergraduate education in Chemical Engineering and in Materials Engineering is the co-operative education, which has been in existence since 1906. It prepares students with industrial experiences and provides financial assistance not available in most institutions during their undergraduate education years. Undergraduates are able to complete their studies with little or no accumulated debt, through working in industry during three of their five years, and then receive starting salaries in the neighborhood of $55K-60K per annum, when they graduate. During their stay in the department our students are also exposed to cutting edge research, which prepares them well for advanced studies after graduation. Graduates of our department are to be found at the highest levels of the chemical and materials industry, both in Ohio, nationally, and internationally.
The department has a total of 27 faculty members, over 150 graduate students and about 300 undergraduate students. All faculty are active researchers and several have published undergraduate and graduate level textbooks. Most faculty are fellows of professional Societies, and are well recognized in Chemical and Materials Engineering fields worldwide. Several faculty serve as editors or co-editors of refereed journals, and publish extensively in these technical journals, as well as make numerous invited and scholarly presentations at National and International conferences. Student presentations at such forums are strongly encouraged by the department.
