Energy resources and production will continue to impact well being of our nation. There is a clear need for alternative sources of energy production and efficient ways of energy utilization. To meet these goals, a new initiative at the COE on Emerging Energy Systems will be helpful towards energizing our faculty and students on new opportunity for research and education. Alternative sources of energy from coal, water, sun, plants, and biological systems, and unique ways of converting these resources of energy into electricity via fuel cells, electrolysis, and solar power conversions will be a critical part of this initiative. Faculty from several departments at COE, and COM will be participating on this initiative because of the varied requirements of the proposed initiative. Four major sub-thrust areas of Fuel Cells, Solar Energy Conversion, Hydrogen Production and Storage, and Alternative Fuels are proposed for this initiative. The specific objectives of research areas, approaches, schedules, and participants are provided in each section.
