He has served over 40 years in Boy Scouting. The Silver Beaver Award is the highest award in Scouting for Adult Volunteers. The St. Louis Area is the 2nd largest council in the U.S. (Mar05) Fernando Hersman, BSChE '49, reports on the Chemical Engineering '49 Banquet on September 7, 2005. We had the annual banquet of the local members of the Chemical Engineering Class of 1949 (Called the 49ers). 16 attended including wives at the Quality Inn in Norwood. Each had one of the new Red cups "Go East Young Bearcat" which was appreciated. The Men still get together every three months, September, December, March, and June first Wednesday at Burbank's. (After 56 years!) (Oct05) Henry Federlin, BSEE '49, of Charlotte NC passed away on 10/8/05. Born on June 10, 1919 in Furth, Germany he was the son of Sigmund and Elsie Federlin. In 1939 Henry Moved to New York City from England, where he had been working as a tool and die maker. He joined the US Army in September 1941 and served in the 999th Signal Corp until he was discharged in November 1945. While in the service, he was awarded a number of citations including the Liberation De LA France. Upon returning to the US , he joined his parents in Ohio where he enrolled in the University of Cincinnati, earning a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering. He worked as an electrical engineer for WPAFB, National cash register, GE, RCA and the FAA. He took a great deal of pride in having been involved in the research and development of early computers, radar systems for the FAA and various projects for NASA. He was a life time member of IEEE. He served on the Board of Directors for Temple Beth Shalom in Cherry Hill, NJ where he resided for over 40 years. He was an active member and local officer in B'nai Brith. As a Holocaust survivor, Henry felt strongly about the separation of church and state and the freedom of religion. His hobbies included bridge, "tinkering", travel, swimming, listening to classical music, reading, visiting museums and formal gardens. Henry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Margaret Federlin of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by his daughters Barbra, Carol and son Tom. Grandchildren include Ben, Rachel, Lisa, Lori, Lydia, Leslie and her husband Neil and Lindsey and her husband Kevin. (Oct05) 1950's Richard Anderegg, BSCE '54, MBA '64 Miami University - Major General/Command Pilot USAF Reserve Retired 1986 - has held senior positions in portland cement manufacturing and sugar refining industries and is working as project manager for a paving contractor. Richard and wife Pamela recently moved to Ft Worth, TX. Daughter Deborah is in Bay Area, CA; and son Doug is in LA. Granddaughter is a freshman at University of Denver; grandson is high school freshman. (May04) Gale R. Whitacre, ME '56, died of a heart attack at Apple Valley in Howard, Ohio on August 3, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Dolores and children, David, Susan, and Sandra and six grandchildren. Gale retired from Battelle Memorial Institute in 1995. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from U.C. in 1956. He received his Master's Degree from Purdue University in 1958. He attended The Ohio State University for his Ph.D. Submitted by Dolores Whitacre on 2/8/06. (Feb06) James Rouse, BSAE '58, is semi-retired from engineering and was ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church in 1997. He is now serving as Vice Chancellor of the Columbus Diocese. (May05) 1960's Michael Ryan, BSChE '62, is retired from the Colgate Palmolive Company. He and wife Glenda have become grandparents for the 8th time. (Nov04) Frank Partee, BSChE '61, is interested in hearing from any classmates, or from fraternity brothers at (then Phi Kappa), now Phi Kappa Theta on Jefferson Avenue, "or anyone else who reads this and knows me from UC days." (May04) Wayne Wells, BSMetE '62, is looking for old friends. "I just looked at the virtual tour of the campus. Far different than 40 some years ago. I am now on the faculty at University of Texas-Brownsville teaching engineering and enjoying life. For those who don't have a map handy, Brownsville is as far south as you can get in Texas and about equal with Key West. Climate is fantastic and my students keep me young. Enjoy hearing from anyone out there." (May04) Eugene Fleeman, BSAE '64, published the 2nd edition of his AIAA textbook, Tactical Missile Design (August 2006). (Sep06) Richard Troutwine, BSAE '66, worked for 3 years at Wright-Patt AFB Ramjet Engine Division of the Propulsion Lab after graduation. He then returned to the family car dealership, Troutwine Auto Sales Inc., Arcanum, Ohio in 1969 and continued in the business until retiring at the end of 2004. Richard says, "Now the real work begins-" (Feb05). Thomas Johani, BSAE '66, MS '68, died suddenly and unexpectedly on May 23, 2005. Tom was a recently retired Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, but had continued working for Lockheed Martin on the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) project in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Tom was 62 when he died. He is survived by his wife, Janet, two daughters and their families, and a brother, Allan. During his dual career as an Air Force reservist and as a civilian space engineer, Tom found time to obtain master's degrees in electrical engineering and engineering management, in addition to his degrees from UC. He loved military space, Colorado, and the Pikes Peak region, as do I. I majored in chemistry at UC and graduated a year earlier than Tom. Our paths met in the late 1970s, when we were both working on the same Air Force space project in Colorado Springs. Tom was a peer, but also someone whose character, initiative, and industriousness I greatly admired. I am posting this class note as information for Tom's classmates from the UC class of 1966, on the occasion of your 40th class reunion is this fall. Submitted by Roger L. Mansfield, A&S '65, on 9/16/06. (Sep06) Russ Doyle, BSCE '68, returned to Ohio by accepting the call to be the minister for the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Portsmouth. Previously he served as a Chaplain for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Brownfield, Texas. On a visit to see family and check out UC and "Baldwin Hall," the Quadrangle and things, he noted, "It's a bit different." (Aug04) Richard Long, BSChe '68, will retire from Marathon Ashland Petroleum in June 2005. Dick spent 31 years with Ashland Petroleum before joining MAP in 1998 through a Marathon/Ashland joint venture. Through his 38 years in the petroleum industry, Dick held a variety of positions including Manager of Technical Analysis for Ashland Petroleum. (Mar05) James F. Gottman, BSEE '69, has been named chairman of the Intellectual Property Practice Group at Dinsmore & Shohl LLP. The firm has one of the largest intellectual property practices in the region with 35 attorneys practicing all aspects of intellectual property law and was recently recognized as a Top Patent and Top Trademark Firm by Intellectual Property Today magazine.(Aug04) 1970's Lew Soloway, BSAE '71, recently got to fulfill his childhood dream of working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory on the next generations of exploratory spacecraft. Lew is the manager of the Mechanical Fabrication and Assembly section. Lew spent the last 20 years in consulting. He and his wife Jane live in Glendale, CA and have three children - Ben, Amanda, and Morgan. (Mar06) Larry Watts, BSME '71,retired from Federal Service at DLA and is now working as a consultant. Living in Columbus, Ohio with my wife Barbara. Will be retiring for good next year. (Dec05) Steve Bicknell, BSAE '73, reports that he and his family have moved closer to UC, relocating to the Nashville (Tennessee) area where Jeanne is a Manager for Nissan Motor Corporation and Steve is preparing for his lot on the senior golf tour. Their twin daughters, Whitney and Lauren, are freshmen at Texas A&M with graduate school at UC in their futures. (Aug04) Dave Lococo, BSME '73, joined the staff of Xavier University as associate director of operations for physical plant in February, 2005. He is responsible for engineering, directing and managing the operational and systems infrastructure for the entire campus and for all grounds maintenance operations. In addition, Lococo is responsible for optimizing contracts with outside resources and maintaining external relationships and participates in the development and implementation of unit policies and procedures. Lococo is originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1973. Prior to coming to Xavier, he was a consulting engineer, and worked for Senco Products, Inc. Most recently, Lococo managed his own company specializing in business research. He and his wife, Judy, live in Sharonville. They have four grown children and five grandchildren. (Jul05) Peter Joiner, EE '75, has been named Director of National Accounts for Alliant Pharmaceuticals, Inc. a pediatric specialty pharmaceutical company. Pete Joiner will oversee the sales and marketing of products with federal, institutional and managed care customers for Alliant. Prior to this role, Joiner was National Account Manager with sanofi-aventis. Joiner won numerous awards, including "Excellence in Leadership," as he worked through the ranks at sanofi-aventis. Positions held include: Director of Marketing Business Resources, Information Systems Manager and Director of Marketing Services. Joiner received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and an M.B.A. in Management from the University of Cincinnati. Submitted by Pete Joiner on 2/9/06. (Feb06)David S. Mitch, BSMetE '75, has been named general manager-plant operations of U. S. Steel's tubular production facilities, reporting to Joseph Alvarado, vice president-tubular. Mitch, 54, will be responsible for the day-to-day operations at all of U. S. Steel's tubular production facilities. The Wheeling, W.Va. native has worked for Lone Star Steel for three years, most recently serving as vice president and general manager-specialty tubing product group. During his 32-year career in steel and tubular products manufacturing, Mitch has held increasingly responsible positions in a variety of disciplines at companies that include Armco Steel (now known as AK Steel), Copperweld and U. S. Steel. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering and completed his master's degree in organizational leadership at Geneva College near Pittsburgh in 2004.Submitted by Erin DiPietro on 6/27/07. (Jun07). Reece Prather, BSEE '75, reports: "Joined with Shremshock Architects to form Shremshock Engineering Inc. SEI is a consulting engineering firm in the building construction industry doing mechanical, plumbing and electrical designs for all types of buildings. I am Principal/Studio manager and lead electrical engineer. Currently (after 5 months), we have four employees and looking for our fifth employee!(Mar06) Richard Taylor, BSME '75, reports that: "We sold the family wholesale beer and wine business, The Taylor Beverage Company, in 2002. Now I am a partner in a new restaurant, Kozmo's Grille, to open in late March 2005 in downtown Massillon, Ohio. I am also a partner in "Interact Success", providing best sales practices training and consulting to employees and owners in the retail industry." (Jan05) Prashant Ranade, B.Tech '75 I.I.T., Bombay, India, MSME '77 University of Cincinnati, MBA '82 Xavier University. President and CEO of Siemens Logistics and Assembly Systems with Sales of $1.4B with 4500 employees. Largest supplier of Material Handling Automation systems located in Grand Rapids, MI. Member of IEEE and MAPI. Two sons who are both gainfully employed after graduating from Dartmouth(2002) and Stanford(2004). (Nov05) Stephen Geswein, MetE'76, is Technical Manager- MSG with the David J. Joseph Company in Cincinnati - Scrap Brokers. Stephen resides in Middletown with wife Debbie. They have two grown sons - Jordan (UC Business '02) resides in Canton, Ohio and Tyler in Middletown. Submitted by Stephen Geswein on 7/25/06. Michael J. Fister, BSEE '77, MS '78, was named president and chief executive officer of Cadence Design Systems Inc. in San Jose, California in May. Previously, he was vice president and general manager of the Enterprise Platforms Group at the Intel Corporation. With approximately 4,800 employees and 2003 revenues of $1.1 billion, Cadence is the largest supplier of electronic design technologies, methodology services, and design services in the world. (Aug04) Mohamed Samir Hefzy, MSAE '77, PhD '81 , professor and graduate director of the department of mechanical, industrial and manufacturing engineering at the University of Toledo has been awarded the ASME Fellow Award for significant engineering achievements. (Aug04) Vincent R. Miller, BSME '74, a resident of Huber Heights, Ohio, and chief of corporate services at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, has been named a Fellow of ASME. In addition to his undergraduate engineering degree from the University of Cincinnati, Vincent earned a master's of science degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio State in 1980. (Aug04) Jagdish S. Sokhey, MSAE '72, PhD '77, a resident of Loveland, Ohio, and senior engineering consultant at AADC/Rolls Royce Corporation (Indianapolis, Ind.), has been named a Fellow of ASME. Dr. Sokhey has over 28 years of aerospace industry experience in the aeromechanical design and development of propulsion systems and has worked for major aerospace companies including Boeing, Rolls Royce and GE Aircraft Engines. He earned his doctorate in aerospace engineering and fluid dynamic at the University of Cincinnati, in 1977. He has authored over 30 papers, articles, reports and publications, holds six U.S. patents and has received numerous engineering awards and honors. (Aug04) Michael Williams, BSEE '76, was recently appointed to the position of Environmental Consultant working in the Corporate Environmental Department. His responsibilities include environmental oversite and strategic planning to meet Federal and State environmental regulations. (Aug04) Alan (Al) Weimer, BSChE '76, delivered the keynote address at the International Particle Technology Conference, PARTEC 2004) in Nuremberg, Germany on March 18. Al is currently Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado. He is co-founder of ALD NanoSolutions, Inc., a University of Colorado spin-off of technology Al co-invented to functionalize individual nanoparticle and other fine particle surfaces. Prior to joining the University of Colorado in 1996, Al was an Associate Research Scientist with the Dow Chemical Company (Midland, MI). His keynote address "Commercial Success through Fundamental Understanding and Persistence" was a presentation regarding the struggle to commercialize novel "Rapid Carbothermal Reduction" Processing that is practiced commercially throughout the world today and produces most of the tungsten carbide powders for high-end cutting tools. (May04) Kenny Gross, PhD '77, is the chief scientist for Sun Microsystems' Physical Sciences Research Center in San Diego. Kenny is a prolific inventor with 93 US patents issued or pending. (Oct05) Oliver Anthony, BSCE '78, has taken a position with the Indiana Department of Transportation as District Construction Engineer for the Greenfield District. (May04). Andrew Zekany, BSCE '78, was promoted to Associate Principal at HKS, Inc., a Dallas-based architectural and engineering firm. Mr. Zekany has an M.S. in Structural Engineering from the University of Texas, Austin. A licensed engineer, he is a member of the American Concrete Institute, American Institute of Steel Construction, Precast and Prestressed Concrete Institute, Post Tensioning Institute, and the Stuctural Engineers Association of Texas. (Aug04) 1980's Lawrence Schumacher, BSEE '80, reports: "I have been enjoying some Bearcat football and basketball games in person this year. My daughter was a member of the 2004 UC cheer squad." (Mar05). Raymond J. Wilke, BSCE '81, was recently named Civil Engineer of the Year in Georgia. Georay, Inc., a civil engineering firm founded by Ray (BSCE '81) and Georgia Wilke, received the Best Development Award from the Fulton County, Georgia, Board of Commissioners on April 21, 2004. The award, for the Trammel Crow Park Constructed Wetlands Design Project, was presented for converting a pristine lake with a failing dam into constructed wetlands, offering offsite mitigation opportunities, employing best management practices, providing passive recreational uses and preserving wildlife habitat. (Aug04) Tom Davis, BSAE '83. Kids, kids, kids! My wife, Gloria, and I are busy rasing our six children in Mountain View, California while I continue to work at NASA Ames Research Center. Our oldest son is a senior at the Univ. of California-Santa Cruz. Our second is a sophomore pitcher on the Stanford baseball team, having finished a high school career where he twice pitched for the U.S. Junior National Team in the Pan Am and World Championships. He was also twice a high school All American. Our younger ones are a junior in high school, interested in drama and engineering, a 7th grader who is a better baseball player than his older brother at this age, a 5th grader who is her school's student council president and a 1st grader who is more of a handful than all of her older siblings put together. We haven't had a "real" summer vacation in years as we spend all of our time traveling around the country and the world watching our kids compete in baseball and gymnastics. (Nov05). Jonathan A. Salem, MetE '83, a materials research engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, has been given an Advanced Ceramics Award by ASTM. Jonathan received the honor from the ASTM International Committee C28 on Advanced Ceramics for his continuous and outstanding contributions to the work of C28 subcommittees, sections, and task groups. A resident of Fairview Park, Ohio, Jonathan has been an ASTM International member since 1988. Jonathan also holds an MS degree in ceramic engineering and a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle. (Aug04) Richard F. Wozniak, BSME '84, has joined M&M Business Solutions, a Meaden & Moore LLC company, as manager. Richard also has a master's degree from Cleveland State University and is a member of the Frontstep Forum User Group, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Solar Energy Society. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Ohio. (Jan05). 1990's John Cardarelli, BSNE '90, MSHP '92, PhD CoM '00, has received one of the highest honors of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the 2006 NSPE Federal Engineer of the Year Award (FEYA). This award is granted to the professional engineer who best exemplifies the standards and expectations of the NSPE, and honors both their academic and professional engineering services across all federal government agencies and/or their (24) nominees. Christopher Chaney, BSCE '94, and his wife Tonya recently welcomed their new son Griffin into the world, weighing 9 pounds, 2 ounces. Chris is now working as a Senior Engineer with the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati. (May04) Christopher T. Calpin, BSCE '92, P.E., DEE, has been promoted to vice president of CDM, a consulting, engineering, construction, and operations firm delivering exceptional service to public and private clients worldwide. He is area manager of the firm's Ohio and Kentucky operations, which include offices in Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky. Calpin has more than 13 years of engineering experience. His areas of expertise include analysis, planning, design, and facilitation of water distribution systems, stormwater and wastewater collection and treatment systems, and stormwater detention facilities. He has led numerous projects that included master planning, infiltration and inflow analyses, permitting, maximum daily load studies, facility studies and design, and financing. He is a member of the Water Environment Federation, National Society of Professional Engineers, and the University of Cincinnati Civil and Environmental Engineering Department Advisory Board, as well as president of the City of Mason, Ohio Zoning Board of Appeals. (Jul05) Carl Draginoff, BSME '91, MSME '92, has taken a position as a Senior R&D Design Engineer at Ethicon Endo-Surgery in Blue Ash working on new medical devices after spending over 5 years designing pneumatic products for Clippard Instrument Laboratory, Inc. Carl and wife, Lisa Lapp - 1990 graduate of UC's College of Education, married in 1997 and have a son, Alexander (age 4.5) and a daughter, Katherine (age 2.5). They continue to live in the Greater Cincinnati area. (Mar05) Shiri Ayalon, BSCompE '96, is back in Cincinnati after living in Upstate New York for a couple of years. She has changed careers a few years back and is now working in finances. She is working for Penn Mutual in downtown Cincinnati as a compliance specialist. She is still iving in Clifton. (Nov05). Ernesto Eustaquio Jr., BSEE '95, is currently involved with high performance computing (HPC) and cluster systems. Other interests include real-time embedded systems, enterprise server/storage and Linux. Held engineering positions at NASA, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell and IBM. (Feb06) Stephen Lasher, BSCE '97, is living in Boston and is manager of the Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Unit at TIAX LLC, a collaborative research and development company. Prarthana Kukkalli, BSCEE '97, MSCS '01, has changed careers from engineering to computer science working as a software developer at Bridgeway Software in Houston, Texas. She has a four year-old daughter Nikitha and is building a house to be completed next year. (Aug04) 2000's Sachin Taparia, MSIE '00, married Nidhi Ghurka in July 03 and is well settled in Dallas. Sachin runs Supply Chain Operations for Aviall, Inc while Nidhi works as a Construction Project Manager. (Aug04) Laura (Kramer) Brezinski, BSME '00, was married November 15, 2003. |
