Biofilm Research Laboratory

The Biofilm Research Laboratory in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering focuses on understanding how water and wastewater biofilms function. Biofilms are found everywhere in nature - growing on rocks in streams, on soil particles in the ground, in water distribution pipes, on ship hulls, on your teeth (dental plaque) and in wastewater treatment processes.

We are researching how biofilms grow, how materials are transported into and out of biofilms, how to control their growth, and how to better utilize biofilms for beneficial purposes.
