Shubham Sah returned from Germany after completing the final round of DHL’s Discover Logistics Competition.  The completion was launched in April 2008 by Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN), the world’s leading logistics services provider.  The completion had three rounds. The first round started with a pool of over 8,500 participants from 120 different countries. The participants managed and developed a small logistics company into a national champion through an on-line game. The top five hundred participants were then grouped into 100 teams of 5 players to enter the second round of competition. The teams competed in three different areas of logistics services, namely forwarding, express, and supply chain services.  Finally, after a rigorous five months of “online gaming,” the top ten teams were invited to DPWN's headquarters in Germany for the final round of competition.

Sam Huang, Sam Anand, and Ernie Hall.

ICAMS Lab Renamed Intelligent Systems Laboratory
The Intelligent Computer-Aided Manufacturing Systems (ICAMS) laboratory was established in September 1998 to develop intelligent systems with a focus on manufacturing applications.  Over the past few years, we found increased applications of intelligent systems outside the manufacturing arena.  Our philosophy in building intelligent systems is to combine human wisdom with machine power.  Such an approach has found increased applications in healthcare and financial service.  Therefore, we have renamed the ICAMS lab the Intelligent Systems Laboratory.  Knowledge-based modeling remains the core technology of the lab.  All computer-aided manufacturing applications are now combined into a research thrust termed supplier-based manufacturing.  Previous works on equipment health monitoring and diagnostic productivity improvement are combined to form a new research thrust termed system monitoring, diagnosis, and prognosis.  Techniques developed under this thrust area can be applied to both manufacturing and service problems.  Some initiatives in service applications include evidence-based patient care, pharmacy operation efficiency improvement, and early detection of adverse drug reaction.
