Project Description:This is a project involving collaboration between a membrane scientist experienced in the creation of micropatterns on membranes for the controlled attachment of neurons and a neurobiologist experienced in the study of self-organizing neuronal networks. The key innovation of this research lies in the formation of microscale topological and chemical patterns to control cell-cell contacts allowing the formation of functional neuronal networks in defined geometrical arrays. The results of this research have the potential to increase our understanding of the ways in which large, ordered groups of neurons process information that is qualitatively different from the way it can be processed in small or disordered groups. The resulting “smart membranes” have the potential to provide new approaches for the design of neuroal nets in silico.
