Project Description:Glucose detection in blood and urine is necessary for the diagnosis of diabetes. Glucose oxidase has been widely used in glucose biosensor construction due to its high selectivity to glucose and high activity over a broad range of pH values. To improve the features of the biosensors, many attempts have been made, including making use of novel immobilization techniques and new enzyme immobilization materials. Only recently, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been demonstrated as biosensors for glucose and DNA detection and their performance has been found to be much superior to those of other carbon electrodes. Our recent work explored several important features of aligned CNT arrays, which is that its ultra small size can be very useful in making nanoelectrode. In this proposed work, CNTs will be plasma coated with functional groups for glucose sensing in collaboration with medical school of UC. Critical issues on sensitivity and stability will be addressed by deposing selected polymer ultrathin films on CNT surfaces. Prototype glucose sensors using CNT arrays will be developed.
