The focus of the IGERT program at the University of Cincinnati is the area of Bio-applications of Membrane Science and Technology. This area includes the study of controlled drug delivery, cell encapsulation, tissue engineering, biosensor development, biofunctional and biomimetic membranes, affinity membranes for high-valued bioseparations, membranes for hemodialysis, and the study of ion and small molecule transport in biological channels. A more complete description of Research Areas and a listing of Dissertation Topics available for the 2006-7 academic year are linked to this page. Doctoral Programs available for IGERT students at UC include many of the major disciplines offered by the Colleges of Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, and the Sciences.

In addition to the same high level of financial support as other IGERT programs (a stipend $30,000 per year and graduate tuition), the program at UC provides many special features and opportunities. All IGERT Trainees must fulfill the doctoral requirements of the individual graduate programs in pursuing their PhD degree as well as to participate in the following IGERT programs in order to qualify for continuing IGERT Fellowship support:

  • Attendance in a ten-week Summer Program beginning in June prior to the beginning of a formal graduate program
    • Laboratory rotations to select a formal dissertation topic
    • A weekly seminar and social program coordinated with the NSF Research Experience for
    • Undergraduates (REU) program at UC
  • Selection of one of three Education Tracks in Pharmaceutics, Biosensors, or Biomedical Engineering and fulfilling Educational Track course requirements
  • Participation in all weekly and monthly seminar programs for IGERT students

Several additional opportunities are available through the IGERT program at UC. These include the following:

  • Opportunity to take individually tailored courses during the summer quarter to provide additional preparation for graduate study to facilitate the crossing of disciplinary lines.
  • Participation in international research or instructional programs at partner universities including the Australian National University, the University of Twente (Netherlands), and Kyoto Institute of Technology
  • Participation in a nationally affiliated program for Preparing Future Faculty
  • Selective opportunities for industrial internships including companies that are members of the multi-university NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/U CRC)) for Membrane Applied Science and Technology (MAST Center) at the University of Cincinnati in collaboration with the University of Colorado.
