Computer Science Careers

Computer scientists are employed in all manner of computer related fields. Computer scientists can work as theorists, researchers, inventors, or practitioners of computer technology. Those employed in research institutions work in areas ranging from complexity theory to hardware to programming language design. Their counterparts in private industry work in areas that deliver computer-based solutions to both the general needs of enterprise's information technologies and specific system implementation pertinent to the industry. Computer scientists devote their expertise in analysis, design of particular application systems, administration of computer systems and networks, and support all aspects of computational needs of an organization.

Job Outlook

Computer hardware engineers are expected to have average employment growth through 2014. Although the use of information technology continues to expand rapidly, the manufacture of computer hardware is expected to be adversely affected by intense foreign competition. As computer and semiconductor manufacturing contract out more of their engineering needs, much of the growth in employment should occur in the computer systems design and related services industry. However, use of foreign computer hardware engineering services also will serve to limit job growth. Computer engineers should still have favorable employment opportunities, as the number of new entrants is expected to be in balance with demand.

Earnings

Starting salaries for computer engineers with a bachelor's degree can be significantly higher than salaries of bachelor's degree graduates in many other fields. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, starting salary offers in 2005 for bachelor's degree candidates in computer science averaged $52,464 a year; master's degree candidates averaged $60,354; and Ph.D. candidates averaged $69,625.

In addition to typical benefits, computer software engineers may be provided with profit sharing, stock options, and a company car with a mileage allowance.
