Prospective Student Activities
College of Engineering BEST Robotics Competition - Sept 8, 2007 Kickoff, October 13, 2007 Mall Day, October 20, 2007 Game Day Event is open to high school students. BEST is a regional organization. The competition is a three day event spread out over 2 months. BEST has been co-sponsored by the College of Engineering, E3, and the College of Applied Science. Women in Engineering Discovery Day- October 24, 2007 Event is open to junior and senior high school women. Students will meet with female faculty and student organizations. Students will visit labs and participate in hands-on activities. MathCounts - February 23, 2008 Event is open to 7th and 8th grade students and is corporate sponsored. MathCounts promotes math, making it challenging, exciting and a prestigious school sport. MathCounts is one of the largest and most successful education programs in the country. The College of Engineering awards two Engineering Camp Scholarships (worth $200 each) to the winners. BRIDGE Competition - February 29, 2008 Competition is open to high school students and is sponsored by the Civil Engineering department. Students build a wooden model bridge to be tested for strength. Winners receive $20 to $50 awards. JETS TEAMS Competition - March 5, 2008 Event is open to high school students. There are 100 testing sites across the U.S., hosting approximately 14,000 students. UC College of Engineering has sponsored this competition for several years and is always one of the largest testing sites, if not the largest, in the nation. Students compete in teams on a two-part science and math exam. The College of Engineering gives a $5,000 scholarship to each of the seven divisions for a total of $35,000. Engineer for a Day - April 2008 (date to be determined) Event is open to minority students from middle school through high school. The National Society of Black Engineers and Toyota Motor Company will be hosting the event. Middle school students have a variety of fast-paced hands-on activities presented by corporate guests. High school students receive a 'pep talk' on ACT/SAT test preparation, scholarship search, and various engineering topics from corporate guests. Men in Engineering and Women in Engineering Summer Camps - MIE July 14 - 18, 2008, WIE July 28 - August 1, 2008 Camps are open to high school students and are one week in length. (Mon.-Fri.) Students learn about the various engineering disciplines visiting labs, hands-on activities, and department presentations. Three corporate visits are planned including site tours and presentation from engineers. The students also compete in a team Impromptu Design, winning gift certificates. The College of Engineering gives each student a $200 scholarship to offset the cost of the camp. Emerging Ethic Engineers (E3) Summer Events (dates to be determined)
