Activities for Young Women

Opportunities for Middle School, Junior High and High School women to participate in engineering related activities partially funded by the Margaret Hagner Women in Engineering Program and the Brian Rowe Foundation include the following:

Hands-On Saturdays
Events are open to middle school girls. Students meet with the student chapter of Society of Women in Engineering (SWE) to participate in hands-on projects in a fun learning environment. Attendance for these events is approximately 20-30 girls.

MathCounts
Event is open to 7th and 8th grade students. MathCounts promotes math, making it challenging, exciting and a prestigious school sport. MathCounts is one of the largest and most successful education programs in the country. The College of Engineering awards Engineering Camp Scholarships (worth $200 each) to the winners. A promising trend is the percentage of girls, now at 40%. Attendance for this event is approximately 400.

Women in Engineering Summer Camp
Camps are open to high school students and are one week in length. (Mon.-Fri.) Students learn about the various engineering disciplines visiting labs, hands-on activities, and department presentations. Corporate visits are planned including site tours and presentation from engineers. The students also compete in a team Impromptu Design, winning gift certificates. The College of Engineering gives each student a $200 scholarship to offset the cost of the camp.

Women in Engineering Open House
Event is open to junior and senior high school women. Students will meet with female faculty and student organizations, i.e. SWE, WISE, NSBE. Students will visit the College's labs and participate in hands-on activities. Attendance for this event is approximately 120.

JETS TEAMS Competition
Event is open to high school students. There are 100 testing sites across the U.S., hosting approximately 14,000 students. UC College of Engineering has sponsored this competition for several years and is always one of the largest testing sites, if not the largest, in the nation. Students compete in teams on a two-part science and math exam. The College of Engineering gives a $5,000 scholarship to each of the seven divisions for a total of $35,000. Female attendance is growing and is now 41%. Attendance for this event is approximately 600.
