Pine (Program for Internet News and Email)
Connecting to Bearcat Online from Pine
You may use Pine from a SUN station (UNIX) or from an HP station to check your E-mail on your Bearcat Online account as needed. Connecting to your Bearcat Online account from Pine is simple.
- Log into the SUN or HP station of your choice (Via Telnet or logging in locally in one of the labs).
- Run Pine from the command prompt
- Type 'G' to go to a specific folder and enter {email.uc.edu}. (The curly braces around email.uc.edu are very important)
- Enter your <username> and <password> for your Bearcat Online account when prompted.
Look at the top of the Pine main menu screen, and it should show the following:
| PINE 3.95 FOLDER INDEX |
Folder: {email.uc.edu} Message xx of yy NEW |
If it does not, exit out of
Pine and perform steps 2 through 4 above again.
To read the mail on you Engineering account, just type pine as you normally would to run the mail reader. The folder at the top of the screen should reflect your mail folder as normal.
Using Pine to ALWAYS connect to Bearcat Online
If you wish to use Pine to read ONLY your Bearcat Online E-mail, use the following steps to set up Pine. You will need to only do this once.
- Start Pine and go to Setup, by pressing 'S'.
- Choose Config, by pressing 'C'.
- Change "smtp-server" to "email.uc.edu".
- Change "inbox-path" to "{email.uc.edu}inbox".
- Change "user-domain" to "email.uc.edu".
- IMPORTANT: Scroll down until you see the entry for "customized-hdrs=".
- Add the value "From: username@email.uc.edu" where username is your Bearcat Online Username. If you omit this part, anyone who tries to respond to email you send from Pine will get the mail returned to them as undeliverable. This is due to the fact that UCENG and Bearcat Online use a different method to generate usernames.
- Exit Config ('E') and quit Pine ('Q').
