The Pine Main Menu Screen

The first column lists the commands available for the main menu. These include the following, which may be used by typing in the letter indicated in the first column:

Get online Help on using Pine. This is available at all levels and is very extensive.
c
Compose and send a mail message. This will invoke the editor of your choice and bring up the Send Message screen.
i
Shows the mail that you have in the current selected folder and allows you to read and manipulate it from the Mail Listing screen.
l
Displays all the folders currently residing in your mail sub-directory. A particular folder may be chosen from this screen.
a
Sends the user to the Address Book screen, where aliases are stored.
s
Setup and configure Pine for personal use, using the Setup screen.
q
Exits Pine after giving the choice of deleting any marked messages.

At the bottom of the screen, there is a menu with the commands available. The list of commands shown changes with the pressing of the 'O' key for "other" commands. You may continue to scroll through the various commands by pressing the 'O' key several times. When you first use Pine, you see the following choices at the main menu level:

Some of these commands are listed here, though they are not all viewable at the first screen. Hit 'O' to scroll to the next set of commands. There is a complete listing of all the commands available in Pine.

p
Changes the highlighted command to the previous one.
n
Changes the highlighted command to the next one.
g
Allows you to immediately go to a particular folder without loading the Folder List screen. Pine will prompt you for the name of the folder you wish to go to.

The Pine Folder Index Screen

The first column has the status of the mail message. The status is shown by one or more letters in it. 'N' signifies an new, unread message, 'A' signifies a message which has been answered, 'X' signifies a message which has been selected using the "select" command, 'D' signifies a message marked for deletion, '+' signifies a mail in which you are the primary receiver, not part of a cc:, and "*" signifies a message you have previously marked as important. If the first column is blank that message has already been read.

The second column contains the message number in the current folder. Messages can be selected by typing the message number and hitting return. If the screen is not big enough to display all messages, moving the arrow or typing the number will move the list of mail messages to the appropriate place.

The third column and fourth contains the date the mail was sent and the author of the mail message. The fifth column displays the number of bytes the message contains. Finally, the sixth column shows the subject of the mail message.

Returns the user to the Main Menu screen.

Views the contents of the current message by taking the user into the View Mail screen.

Reply to the current message, sending mail to the author of this message.

Composes a new mail message and sends it to a specified recipient.

Allows the user to go to a particular folder by typing its name.
l
Brings up the Folder List screen and allows the user to choose a new folder to view the contents of.
q

The Pine Folder List Screen

From the folder list, users are able to choose a particular folder for which they want to view the messages. To move about the screen, use either the 'P' or 'N' keys or the arrows keys.

The Pine Compose Mail Screen

Pine Send Mail Screen

This screen allows the user to enter a mail message, specify the recipients and provide any attachments. Use the arrow keys to move around the screen between fields.

Aborts the current message and returns the user to the Main Menu screen.

Brings up the Address Book screen, for the user to choose an alias while in the To: or Cc: fields.

Sends the current message to the recipient specified in the To: and Cc: fields.
^J
Allows the user to add one or more attachments to the mail message.

The Pine Setup Configuration Screen

This screen can be reached by typing 'S' and then an 'C' from the Main Menu screen. Use the arrow keys to move around the screen between fields.

The Pine Address Book Screen

Pine Address Book Screen

This screen is used for adding and editing the current aliases set up for Pine. The screen is divided into several columns. The first column lists the actual alias names that are used in the To: field of the mail messages. The second column lists the real names of the users which are aliased, or a long name to recognize a distribution list. The last column shows the actual email addresses of the users specified by the given alias. In the case of multiple recipients, there is a heading "Distribution List" and then the user email addresses. A distribution list may also contain other aliases which have been define previously.
