Safety: Lab Safety/Disposal

Fire Safety

The University of Cincinnati is committed to protecting its students, faculty and staff from safety risks of all kinds.  Consequently, the University subscribes to and follows all applicable fire codes and regulations.
In the event you suspect a fire (smell or sight of smoke, open fire, etc.) immediately pull the fire alarm if one is available in the near vicinity.  A call to 911 should also be made to verify that the alarm was received, or to make the initial report if an alarm station was not pulled.
When you hear a fire alarm in any University building you should evacuate that building as quickly as safely possible.  In addition to being a prudent safety practice, this is required by Cincinnati Fire Code and those who fail to evacuate a building during an alarm can be cited by the Fire Division.
If you have any questions regarding fire safety procedures call the Industrial Health and Safety office at 556-4968

Hazardous Wastes

The objectives of the hazardous waste management program are to provide protection for employees/students and the environment from hazards posed by chemical, biological, radiological, and infectious wastes.
Contaminated scarps; human and animal blood samples, blood products, other body fluids, tissues, and organs are all considered biological and infectious materials. These materials should be isolated from the general wastes and discarded directly into labeled containers which identify them as such.
Waste chemicals which have the properties of toxicity, flammability, reactivity or corrosivity are considered hazardous wastes. These chemicals must be isolated from solid waste (normal trash) and properly containerized and labeled for disposition.
