Students from Tuskegee University in Alabama are in residence at UC this summer as part of a partnership to attract students to professions in nuclear engineering and health physics. The UCNRE-TU Bridge Building Project, representing the UC Nuclear and Radiological Engineering - Tuskegee University, focuses on recruiting Tuskegee seniors in engineering, physics, chemistry, and mathematics to visit UC and work on research projects with faculty from the two schools.

Designated as "Bridge Scholars", the students, Jacob W. Capps, Keith J. Green, Maisha M. Murry, and MacArthur Weatherspoon, have been in Cincinnati since June 23. Says Maisha, "They (instructors and staff) have already developed my interest in the University of Cincinnati." MacArthur agreed, adding, "We are having a good time. Everyone has been very nice."

The partnership began in December 2001 when representatives of Tuskegee's engineering programs visited UC. They were welcomed by Mitchel Livingston, vice president for Student Affairs and Human Resources; Ed Prather, assistant engineering dean; and several faculty.

Principal investigators on the project are Professor John Christenson (UC) and Professor Pradosh Ray (Tuskegee). Co-PIs are Syed Ali (Tuskegee) and Shoaib Usman (UC). For the original story of this partnership by Chris Curran with pictures by Carrie Cochran, please click here.
