As a research unit, the Center specializes in particular areas to effectively acomplish the following significan results:
  • general research that advances the state of the art in robotics
  • research services for government organizations
  • trained researchers for industrial research
  • trained teachers for universities
  • consultation to industry
  • technology transfer of new concepts to industrial personnel
  • applications solutions for particular industrial problems
  • software developments
  • inventions
  • prototype developments
The teaching function accomplished by Center personnel has included the senior and graduate level courses, Robotics I, II, III, and IV in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Nuclear Engineering.
Hundreds of seniors and graduate students have participated in these courses. The Center also participates in the Advanced Course in Manufacturing (ACM); this primarily involves industrial students. The Center also conducts Robotics topical Short Courses for industrial representatives.

The service function accomplished by Center personnel consists of robot demonstrations for groups from various schools and colleges. These groups have ranged from second graders, gifted children, and prospective engineering students to undergraduate and graduate students from local educational institutions and have involved many thousands of visitors.

Robotics Research

  • Robotic Palletizing of Mixed Size and Weight Containers: This problem is generic and has wide application. It involves extensive use of an industrial robot interfaced with sensors and conveyors, specially designed grippers, and the solution of a difficult machine intelligence problem.
