Sustainable Urban Engineering (SUE) at the University of Cincinnati (UC) is a trans-disciplinary education and research Center. The Center at UC:

  • studies how urban infrastructure and environmental policies affect the long-term health and wealth of cities and
  • develops and disseminates information regarding the scientific metrics, policies and technologies that promote the evolution of economically and environmentally sustainable urban regions.

By the time today’s college graduates reach retirement age, the urban population of the world will have doubled in size. Quality of life will increasingly be impacted by public policies that invest in critical urban infrastructure systems – systems that enable urban economic development and affect population mobility, economic choice, and environmental quality.

Issues related to metropolitan development, urban infrastructure, and environmental health have long been studied within segregated University departments, saddling graduates with their disciplinary world views.

The Center for Sustainable Urban Engineering breaks down these disciplinary silos, producing individuals that (1) can synthesize information from Engineering, Planning, and Health and Environmental Sciences, and (2) have the knowledge to weigh urban infrastructure decisions and policies and promote those that lead to sustainable metropolitan development.
