Homework # 5

Homework:

• 1- Using the second order filter theory given in the text, design one low-pass and one high-pass filter. You may pick a frequency of up to 500 MHz.

  Note 1: For both filters, obtain a maximally flat response with no peaks, i.e., Q=1/sqrt(2).

• 2- Using the formulas given in the supplementary notes, design one low-pass and one band-pass filter. You may pick a frequency of up to 500 MHz and choose either a maximally flat or an equal ripple filter. For the bandpass, do not exceed 10% of your center frequency. Emulate your filter circuit in PSpice and plot the output on log scale. Choose the number of sections between 3 and 5.

• 3- Design an active band-pass filter using one of the schemes given in the book. Limit your frequency to 0-1 kHz and try the highest possible Q value from your filter. Simulate your circuit in PSpice and verify your design.

• 4- Design a two-stage tuned amplifier that will operate at a center frequency of 455 kHz. Determine all bias resistors and coupling capacitors. Insert your tuned circuit at the intermediate stage. Simulate your results. You can pick either BJTs or FETs for the circuit.

Note: When you plot the transmission characteristic against frequency, for the initial plot, you may have a large frequency sweep. Once you determine the center frequency, reduce your frequency sweep range to cover the two sides of the filter. You have to set-up your frequency sweep and run PSpice again and plot. This way you will see the details of the transmission characteristics.
