Report on Different Techniques for Determination of Molecular Weight

 

Write a 6 page report describing methods for determining molecular weight and appropriate equations defining:
a) what is measured,
b) how is it measured,
c) how is the measurement converted to molecular weight,
d) what moment of the molecular weight is obtained and
e) why is this moment is obtained.

 

Include in your report sections on:
1) GPC,
2) osmotic pressure,
3) light scattering,
4) chemical end-group analysis and
5) intrinsic viscosity (dilute solution viscosity). 

You can include other methods if you find these.  Include the sources for your information as numbered citations indexed in the text of your report.

 

A possible source among many is "Polymer Characterization" by BJ Hunt and MI James that you can find in the Chemistry Library between Reveschl and the Chemistry tower on the 5'th floor. This book has a chapter on molecular weight determination and a chapter on chromatography of polymers. There is a whole section of books on polymer analysis there. You may also be able to use the internet.
