Crystallization Quiz

horizontal rule

  1. Armed with only a DSC, how would you determine the melting temperature of a “perfect crystal”, noted as T0m.
  2. You just received a significant grant and have purchased a new SAXS unit that enables you to measure the lamellar thickness in films that were isothermally crystallized at various temperatures.  Show the plot that you would use to determine T0m.
  3. How would you determine the morphology of a polymer crystal?
  4. In the Avrami plot, a second regime at later crystallization time is observed with a lower slope.  What does this change in slope mean and what causes it?  What is significant about this point in time?
  5. If you were to produce a film and wanted to maximize the barrier properties, would you have a high or low supercooling?  Why?
